Respect is something classed as being earnt. Children should pick up from an early age how to be respectful, and it can be taught in a number of ways both naturally and enforced by parents. Model respect in the home
A lot of things start from the home. You yourself would have found many of your skills from your own parents, so it’s time to pass the baton. Model it regularly in the home and watch what your child is able to pick up from your mannerisms and actions with others. These all matter when it comes to your child’s awareness of their own skills and how they can help their own development of other core values.
When reading a book or watching a film, point out acts of respect
In showing your child how to be respectful you should identify examples of respect in popular media. Many child-friendly films and stories will teach your child about how to be respectful towards others, even those through all walks of life. Point them out to your child as well, and ask your child what they think of each example you both spot together. Get them into the mindset of others and how they think they could replicate the same actions in their own lives.
Praise your child for their bravery
Being brave is critical for a child’s understanding, but it’s not the be-all and end-all if your child needs a bit more direction. A child can be brave by handling something they didn’t enjoy doing in the past, and you should show them how proud you are of their progress. This all motivates your child to feel more confident and capable in their own skills.
