We’re all different and unique in our own ways which means that there’s lots that we can learn from one another. The beauty of diversity. As we live in a multicultural society, it’s likely that your child will come across those that are very different to themselves and it’s important that they know how to respect these differences. It’s needed for socialising but also developing an open mind and growth. We’ve teamed up with a nursery in Colchester to share a few ways in which you can explore this with your child.
Cultural Occasions
One way to do this is through education. Ignorance comes from a lack of understanding and learning about other cultures can help your child to see how beautiful and fascinating they are. A fun way to do this through celebrating them alongside the communities themselves. Like our culture, they also have their own celebrations and customs like Diwali, Eid, Holi and more.
History
Learning about history is also important. Many ethnic minority groups have contributed to important discoveries and inventions all over the world. They are often not spoken about in history lessons which is a shame but that’s not to say that you can’t fill in this gap yourself at home. It can help children with developing appreciation and their understanding of the world.
Subconscious Bias
We’re all affected by subconscious bias. It’s in the media, the things that we’re grown up hearing and have been around which have subconsciously affected our beliefs. While only in our thoughts, it can subconsciously affect how we treat others which is why as a parent it’s important to address and challenge biases of this kind.
