Looking to install some new fence panels? Here are some top tips to help you get started!
Inform neighbours
Unless you’ve already gone through the correct channels to ensure your fence panels are installed in the right place in your garden, you should let your neighbours know of your plans. If it’s next to their property they may be wondering if you have the permission to do so or if it’s within your boundary lines.
Check if any wires are running underneath
If there are any service cables running under your garden that you already know of or have just discovered, you’ll need to add fence post supports. These are only designed to help on solid ground, but not for soft ground. If your planned fence area has running cables and it’s in a soft ground area then you may want to reconsider where your fence will be installed.
Plan ahead if you’re using cement
You will need to make a gap of around 1.5 – 2cm if you’re adding concrete to the bottom of the fence. You may consider cement if you’re after a more secure structure and to help reduce mould or rotting.
Don’t feel afraid to ask your friends for help
Putting up a fence needs additional support and it’s wise to call on your friends to help you out. Holding up large pieces of wood and applying concrete requires more than one person on the job, so don’t be afraid to ask a friend or family member for a hand.
Put your fences up in early spring or late autumn
This is recommended if you have any plants growing around where you want to put your fence. It means they have plenty of time to adjust to their surroundings in the summer when they’re most likely to grow.
