There’s no way around it, unless you are the queen of self-confidence, it’s pretty likely that you will start to feel a flurry of nerves before heading out on a date. First date jitters are particularly common, as it is before the first date that we tend to ask ourselves a huge list of questions before we head into the unknown. Will the person like me? What if I don’t like them? Do I look okay? Will they want to see me again? This feeling is completely normal, so here are a few pointers for those asking themselves how do I stop feeling anxious before a date?
Stop with the negative talk and self-hate.
The first step to calming your nerves and preventing yourself from feeling anxious before a date is to stop beating yourself up. It’s natural to worry about what others think of you; we all do this. However, when it gets to the point that you’re trying to talk yourself out of a date, or worrying too much about how your date will perceive you, it’s time to take a step back.
Stop feeling anxious before a date by practising meditation.
Meditation has been known to have so many amazing benefits, both mental and physical. It can help you to find inner peace, become more in tune with your own thought patterns and help you to become less stressed and anxious. Meditation is about slowing down and calming your body. The results can be almost instant, and those who continue to practice meditation consistently have reported huge improvements in their self-esteem and body image.
Stop seeing these jitters and nerves and instead view them as excitement.
Dating is nerve-wracking, sure. But do you know what else it is? Exciting! Instead of viewing your pre-date jitters as anxiety, try to view the butterflies as excitement and happiness. This could be the beginning of something amazing, so instead of feeling negativity, replace it with positive feelings of anticipation by letting go and doing something that gets you pumped up. My favourite way to get my brain into a more excited and happy state is to put on my favourite music and have a one-person dance party!
