Helping Your Child Cope with Exam Stress

Having stress is a very normal thing that children will have to handle, but it’s about managing that stress that’s key for their development. A lot of that stress will come in the form of managing their workload when it comes to exams.

If your child is soon to be entering an important phase in their life, where they’ll be taking exams for GCSEs, A Levels and/or other qualifications, then they’ll need as much support as they can get.

In this guide from a secondary school in Bath, we provide some top tips to help your child with their stress levels when it comes to exams.

Ensure your child takes plenty of breaks

It’s tempting to power through exam revision as much as you can, but this can spell a recipe for disaster. Give your child the understanding of break time and how valuable they are. Alternatively, you can set an alarm to remind them of when they should be taking breaks in their revision. Breaks will help your child reset and alleviate the stress they may be feeling.

Ensure they have a good sleep pattern

Help your child with their sleeping schedule by setting them a good time to get them in bed at a reasonable time. In doing this, your child will be getting a good night’s rest after all their hard work is complete. Having time to rest is just as important as studying itself.

Reassure your child often

Have regular conversations with your child to see how they’re feeling and what they feel is going well for them. Check in often and ask if they need any support from you in terms of setting deadlines and goals. Most importantly, remind your child that they’re doing as well as they can with what they’re studying, exams can be retaken, and it’s not the be all and end all of their studies.
