Explain What Peer Pressure Means
Help your child what is means to be pressured by peers into doing something potentially dangerous or troublesome. If they can understand what peer pressure actually is, it will be easier for them to stop it in its tracks. Perhaps share some examples of peer pressure or even role play certain scenarios, to take your child’s understanding to the next level.
Talk About True Friendship
Ask your child to consider what makes a true friend. Do they think a true friend would pressure them to do something that could get them into trouble or put them in harm’s way? The answer should, of course, be no. It might help you to meet your child’s friends so that you can determine if they might be a good or bad influence.
Teach Your Child to Have Boundaries
Talk to your child about the fact that it’s ok to say no and have certain boundaries. To help your child feel more comfortable saying “no”, you could share some examples of phrases they could use instead, such as “that’s no okay with me” or “I would prefer to do something else”. Help them understand that following the crowd and doing what other people do isn’t something to be admired, it’s far better for them to stand up for themselves and be their own person.
Be a Good Role Model
When it comes to teaching your child certain behaviours or values, the best thing you can do is to be a good role model. Demonstrate the types of behaviour you’d like them to replicate. So, let them see you saying no or going against the grain.
